(6/15-16) Hikin' Up a Volcano, No Biggie

Brekkie

After Spanish class, we watched Sin Nombre, a movie about the struggles many people face in Central America, specifically how many are forced to migrate illegally to America to escape the dangers of drug cartels, gangs, and lack of opportunity in their country. Rather than ending happily ever after, the movie showed the cruel but realistic reality that so many people in these countries face, and have no choice but to try to escape them by fleeing the country. But I also think it's important to see immigrants to America as more than all the problems and struggles they went through. If we do that, it's easy to stereotype them rather than seeing them as individual people.

Lunch at John's
Even though it's only been around a week, I've been learning so much about things that I wouldn't have even thought about in the safe, familiar, American bubble I live in. More than any other trip abroad I've been on, my perspective has broadened so much, as well as my appreciation for traveling. You really learn so much, more than you could ever learn just staying in your comfort zone.

Super yummy lunch!
Ended off the week on Friday with some fun at salsa dancing! After salsa, Kurun, Sofia, Elaine, and I decided to have a movie night. We watched Black Swan. I was terrified the entire 2 hours. It was a really well-made movie, but so freaking scary. We stayed up a good hour after the movie talking about other weird freaky psychological experiments and movies, which probably wasn't a good idea but it's okay because some Joseph Gordon Levitt in (500) Days of Summer calmed our nerves a little bit. Probably wasn't a good idea to go to bed at 3 AM with the next day starting at 7 AM, but it was fun nonetheless!
